Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has arrived in New York to represent Pakistan at the 81st United Nations General Assembly session.
NEW YORK: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has arrived in New York to represent Pakistan at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, according to official Pakistani government reports.
The prime minister is participating in the opening proceedings of the General Assembly session. The proceedings are scheduled to include addresses by United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and US President Donald Trump, according to Radio Pakistan.
During his visit, Shehbaz Sharif is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with world leaders attending the UN General Assembly session in New York.
The prime minister arrived in New York with a small Pakistani delegation. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar and Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi are accompanying him during the visit.
Shehbaz Sharif is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly on Sept. 25. According to the official account of his visit, he will present Pakistan’s position on the evolving regional and global security situation and emphasize dialogue, diplomacy and peaceful resolution of conflicts.
The prime minister is also expected to highlight Pakistan’s diplomatic and mediation efforts aimed at reducing tensions and promoting peace and stability in the region. His address will cover Pakistan’s priorities on sustainable development, climate change, counterterrorism, Islamophobia and global economic challenges.
The Foreign Office had earlier said the prime minister would participate in high-level events and hold bilateral meetings with world leaders and the UN secretary-general during his visit.
The 81st UN General Assembly session provides Pakistan an opportunity to present its positions on regional and international issues before the wider international community while engaging with participating world leaders and senior UN officials.
