US President Donald Trump praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during his UNGA address and again discussed his claimed role in ending the May 2025 Pakistan-India military escalation.
US President Donald Trump praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during his address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, calling the Pakistani premier a “terrific man” while again highlighting his claimed role in helping end the military escalation between Pakistan and India in May 2025.
Trump, while discussing conflicts he said his administration had helped resolve since taking office, mentioned Pakistan and India alongside disputes involving Thailand and Cambodia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, and the conflict in Gaza.
Referring specifically to Pakistan’s prime minister, Trump said: “The prime minister of Pakistan — terrific man,” and added that Shehbaz had credited him with saving millions of lives.
Trump has repeatedly claimed that his administration helped bring the Pakistan-India military confrontation to an end in May 2025. Tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours escalated after a deadly attack targeting tourists in occupied Kashmir. India attributed the attack to Pakistan, while Islamabad rejected the allegation.
The two sides subsequently exchanged military strikes before a ceasefire was announced in May. Trump has since repeatedly spoken about his involvement in efforts to de-escalate the confrontation.
During his UN address, Trump also referred to Pakistan’s military leadership, having previously praised Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir.
The US president devoted substantial attention to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, defending US action aimed at preventing Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Reuters reported that Trump warned he could take further military action if no peace agreement is reached.
Trump said he believed a deal with Iran could be reached after the US midterm elections scheduled for Nov. 3. He also urged other countries to join Washington in applying economic pressure on Tehran, arguing that greater isolation could encourage Iran to negotiate.
Trump further suggested that Iran was waiting to see the outcome of the US midterm elections before making major decisions.
