Punjab Faces Dangerous Eid Heatwave as Temperatures Near 50°C

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.

It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Provincial Disaster Management Authority has warned that Punjab is likely to experience an intense heatwave during the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha holidays, with temperatures expected to rise far above normal seasonal levels across several districts.

According to the disaster management authority, temperatures in many parts of the province may remain 4 to 7 degrees Celsius higher than average over the coming days. The warning has raised serious concerns over dehydration, heat exhaustion, and other heat-related illnesses as millions prepare for Eid celebrations.

Southern districts of Punjab are expected to face the harshest conditions, with temperatures forecast to approach 50 degrees Celsius. Major cities, including Lahore, are also likely to experience extremely hot weather, with daytime temperatures hovering around 42 degrees Celsius. Officials added that hot and humid conditions may continue even during nighttime hours, reducing chances of relief for residents.

In response to the severe weather forecast, the Director General of PDMA issued precautionary guidelines urging people to avoid unnecessary outdoor movement, especially between 10am and 5pm when temperatures are expected to peak.

Citizens have been advised to drink plenty of water and fluids, wear light-coloured and loose-fitting clothing, and cover their heads while outdoors. Authorities also stressed that children, elderly individuals, and people suffering from medical conditions should stay indoors as much as possible to reduce the risk of heatstroke.

Special arrangements are also being ordered for Eid-related activities, particularly at cattle markets established across Punjab. Local administrations have been directed to ensure the availability of shaded areas and clean drinking water for traders, buyers, and livestock amid the extreme weather conditions.

The advisory further highlighted concerns for butchers, labourers, traders, and sanitation workers who will continue outdoor duties during Eid holidays. Officials urged workers exposed to direct sunlight to take frequent breaks and remain hydrated throughout the day.

Health experts warned that prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures can trigger serious complications, including dehydration, dizziness, heat exhaustion, and potentially life-threatening heatstroke, especially among outdoor workers and vulnerable groups.

Authorities have encouraged residents to stay updated through official weather advisories and follow all safety instructions issued by emergency services. The PDMA helpline 1129 will remain operational to provide assistance and emergency support during the heatwave period.
