RAWALPINDI (Syed Muhammad Yaseen Hashmi): The investigation into the Rawalpindi suicide attack has been further expanded, with new findings revealing detailed planning, surveillance, and movement of the attacker prior to the incident.
According to the investigation report, the suicide bomber conducted a formal reconnaissance of the mosque on February 2. CCTV footage has helped investigators trace all routes used by the attacker to reach the mosque.
The report identified the attacker as Yasar, a resident of Peshawar, who had gone missing from his home around one and a half years ago. During this period, he reportedly remained in intermittent contact with his family through phone calls.
Investigators revealed that the attacker traveled from Nowshera to Islamabad via public transport while wearing a suicide jacket. He reportedly stayed briefly at a nearby hotel before walking from Khanna Road to the mosque.
Sources said the attacker fired two shots at the mosque gate and six inside the prayer hall. After injuring a security guard during the firing, he detonated the explosive vest.
The suicide jacket reportedly contained 4 to 6 kilograms of explosives, packed with ball bearings to increase the blast’s lethality. Advanced plastic materials were also used in the construction of the vest.
Security agencies continue investigations to identify facilitators and dismantle the network behind the attack.
