Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian discuss bilateral ties, regional developments and efforts to promote peace and stability.
NEW YORK: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in New York on Thursday on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, with the two leaders discussing Pakistan-Iran relations, regional developments and efforts to promote peace and stability.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sen. Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi and senior officials from both countries also attended the meeting.
During the meeting, the two leaders reaffirmed the close and longstanding relations between Pakistan and Iran and emphasized the need to further strengthen bilateral cooperation across areas of mutual interest.
The leaders also discussed the changing situation in the region. Prime Minister Shehbaz expressed deep concern over the long-running conflict and stressed the importance of restraint, de-escalation and sustained diplomatic engagement to establish lasting peace and stability in the region.
The prime minister also underscored the importance of continuing to implement the understanding reached under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s readiness to play a sincere and constructive role in promoting regional peace and stability.
President Pezeshkian appreciated Pakistan’s principled diplomacy toward Iran and its joint efforts for regional peace and security.
The Iranian president also emphasized the longstanding strength of Pakistan-Iran relations, describing them as being rooted in shared history, culture and religious ties. He reiterated Iran’s strong desire to further expand multilateral cooperation between the two countries in various fields.
Both sides stressed the importance of maintaining regular consultations and close communication to address existing challenges and benefit from emerging opportunities.
