Speaking on Arctic security, she noted that the desire to acquire Greenland and its mineral wealth is the same highlighting ongoing concerns over the strategic territory.
Tensions escalated last month after Trump expressed interest in acquiring Greenland by force, drawing international criticism. A temporary reduction in tensions followed a framework agreement between the US and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte but Frederiksen emphasized that relations remain cautious.
The Arctic’s strategic importance has grown as climate change opens new routes and Russia and China increase their presence. The US views Greenland as vital for national and NATO security. Frederiksen and Greenlandic Premier Jens Frederik Nielsen stressed that pressuring Greenlanders is unacceptable and that diplomacy must respect autonomy.
A working group of the US Denmark and Greenland has been formed to discuss security priorities. Frederiksen described discussions with US officials including Marco Rubio as constructive and expressed hope that diplomacy can resolve differences without crossing red lines.
