New feature aims to enhance user privacy and transform communication globally
A major change is coming to WhatsApp, as the platform prepares to introduce a username-based communication system aimed at improving user privacy and convenience.
According to a report by The Economic Times, the Meta-owned messaging app is working on a feature that will allow users to connect without sharing their phone numbers. Instead, individuals will be able to communicate through unique usernames for text chats, voice calls, and video calls.
The update is expected to roll out globally by mid-2026, with June being targeted for its initial launch. If implemented as planned, the feature could significantly change how users interact on the platform.
Privacy experts say the move will give users more control over their personal information. By eliminating the need to share phone numbers, users can communicate more securely, especially when connecting with unknown contacts.
Similar systems already exist on platforms like Instagram and Facebook, as well as messaging apps such as Telegram and Signal. However, for WhatsApp, this marks a significant shift in its core functionality.
Reports indicate the username feature will be optional, meaning users can still choose to communicate via phone numbers. Availability of usernames will depend on uniqueness, and existing contacts will continue using traditional methods.
The update is being seen as a key step in WhatsApp’s evolution toward a more privacy-focused future.
