Federal government launches temporary relief measure to ease commuting costs amid rising inflation
ISLAMABAD: All public transport in Islamabad will be free for commuters for 30 days following a directive issued by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The initiative is designed to reduce financial pressure on residents as living costs continue to rise and to provide immediate relief to daily travelers in the federal capital. The policy will take effect from tomorrow and will cover buses and other public transport services operating across the city. Commuters will not be required to purchase tickets during the designated period. It forms part of a broader public relief package announced by the federal government.
Officials said the Ministry of Interior will fund the programme, with an estimated cost of Rs350 million allocated for its implementation. Authorities explained that the measure targets workers, students, and low-income commuters who rely heavily on public transportation for essential travel. Transport operators are expected to coordinate with relevant departments to ensure uninterrupted service across all routes during the free travel period. Further operational guidelines, including service coverage and monitoring mechanisms, are likely to be issued as implementation begins across the capital’s transport network.
