Family urges Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to review prolonged detention cases and ensure justice
A prisoner identified as Zahir Shah, son of Safdar Shah, died while in custody at a central jail in Peshawar, where he had been transferred from Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail. His death has sparked grief and raised concerns over delays in the release of inmates.
According to his family, they had been expecting his return home soon and were hopeful that he would be released after spending years behind bars. Instead, they received news of his death, leaving them devastated.
Zahir Shah’s son said he never had the opportunity to see his father and appealed to authorities to ensure that other children do not face a similar fate. He questioned whether administrative negligence or flaws in the legal system were responsible for the delay in his father’s release.
The family also highlighted a law passed on September 6, 2022, which restricts remission for certain prisoners, raising concerns about inmates jailed before the law’s enactment who have already completed lengthy sentences.
They have urged the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government and prison authorities, including IG Prisons, to form a committee to review such cases, stating that many prisoners may have completed their sentences but remain incarcerated without release.
