Inmate-crafted products go on public display at historic Peshawar Museum under new rehabilitation initiative in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Peshawar: A first-of-its-kind souvenir shop showcasing products made by prison inmates has been inaugurated at the Peshawar Museum in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, marking a rehabilitation-focused initiative aimed at promoting skills development and reform through creative work within correctional facilities.
Inaugural ceremony attended by Secretary Culture and Archaeology Saadat Hassan as chief guest, along with Inspector General of Prisons Rehan Gul Khattak, Director General of Archaeology and Museums Dr. Abdul Samad, and Member National Assembly Faisal Amin Gandapur. Officials said the initiative aims to encourage constructive engagement of inmates and support rehabilitation. The shop features handmade crafts, paintings, and inmate-produced items displayed for public sale within the museum.
Authorities said 30 percent of revenue from sales will be provided directly to inmates as compensation, establishing an incentive-based rehabilitation model. The project is a joint collaboration between the Department of Archaeology and Museums and the Prisons Department, reflecting a broader strategy to integrate skill-building with correctional reform. Located in the historic Peshawar Museum, a key site of Gandhara civilization, the outlet adds cultural and tourism value for visitors.
Stakeholders described the initiative as a step toward social reintegration, highlighting its potential to reduce recidivism and support inmates in developing marketable skills. The shop is expected to serve as both a cultural attraction and a rehabilitation platform linking heritage preservation with correctional reform efforts.
