Police say a juvenile suspect linked to a series of burglaries was apprehended by residents in Rawalpindi’s New Town area before being handed over for investigation.
RAWALPINDI: A teenage suspect allegedly linked to a group of Afghan minors involved in a series of domestic burglaries was caught red-handed by local residents during a theft attempt in the New Town area of Rawalpindi, police and witnesses said on Monday.
According to details, the incident occurred on Siddu Pur Road when residents spotted two individuals allegedly attempting to break into a house. One of the suspects was apprehended on the spot, while another, identified by locals as the group’s alleged ringleader, managed to flee the scene.
Police said preliminary information suggests the group of Afghan-origin minors has been active in multiple residential areas of New Town police jurisdiction, including Sixth Road, Katarian, Siddu Pur Road, Pandora Chowk, Stadium Road and surrounding neighborhoods, where several house theft cases have been reported in recent weeks.
During the arrest, residents recovered a weapon described as an “American-style dagger” from the detained suspect, according to police sources. Authorities have not yet verified the origin or classification of the recovered item and said it will be examined as part of the investigation.
Locals informed New Town Police, who arrived at the scene shortly after the suspect was detained. Police took custody of the juvenile and transferred him to the police station for further investigation.
Efforts are underway to locate the second suspect who escaped, while investigators are also reviewing reported burglary incidents in the area to determine whether they are linked to the same group.
