Scrutiny process begins after hundreds of candidates submit nomination papers across 24 constituencies in Gilgit-Baltistan
GILGIT: A total of 664 candidates have submitted their nomination papers for 24 constituencies of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly, marking a significant level of participation ahead of the upcoming elections, according to officials.
Data shared by Election Commission of Gilgit-Baltistan shows varied levels of competition across districts, with some constituencies witnessing a particularly high number of candidates.
Among the constituencies, GB-2 Gilgit-2 recorded the highest number of candidates with 58, followed by GB-14 Astore-2 with 57 candidates. Other notable constituencies include GB-20 Ghizer-2 with 42 candidates, and GB-4 Nagar-1 and GB-6 Hunza, each with 38 candidates.
In contrast, relatively fewer candidates filed papers in constituencies such as GB-18 Diamer-4 with 11 candidates, GB-17 Diamer-3 with 14, and GB-16 Diamer-2 with 15 candidates, reflecting varying political dynamics across regions.
The Election Commission confirmed that the nomination phase has now concluded and the scrutiny process is underway as per the official schedule. During this phase, candidates’ documents will be reviewed to determine their eligibility to contest the Election.
Following the scrutiny, a final list of eligible candidates will be published, after which election campaigns are expected to intensify across Gilgit-Baltistan.
The large number of candidates signals heightened political activity in the region, with parties and independents gearing up for a competitive electoral contest in the strategically important territory.
