Emergency response in the Arabian Sea highlights maritime cooperation as Pakistan assists stranded foreign crew following vessel failure
ISLAMABAD: In a significant demonstration of humanitarian commitment beyond geopolitical divides, the Pakistan Navy has launched an emergency rescue operation to assist stranded foreign sailors in the Arabian Sea after a distress call from an Indian-bound vessel.
According to official sources, the merchant ship MV Gautam, traveling from Oman to India, suffered a critical technical malfunction mid-journey, leaving seven crew members, six Indian nationals and one Indonesian stranded in vulnerable conditions in open waters.
The situation escalated when the Maritime Rescue and Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Mumbai formally reached out to Pakistani authorities, requesting urgent assistance to avert a potential maritime disaster. The appeal triggered an immediate response under established international maritime safety protocols.
Acting swiftly, the Pakistan Navy deployed a vessel from the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA), identified as Kashmir, to the distress location. The rapid mobilization underscored the operational readiness of Pakistan’s maritime forces and their adherence to global rescue obligations.
Upon arrival, PMSA Kashmir secured the affected vessel and initiated onboard assessments. Rescue personnel provided essential supplies, including food and medical aid, while technical teams began evaluating and addressing the mechanical failure that had crippled the ship.
Officials confirmed that all crew members are currently safe and receiving necessary support. The ongoing operation focuses on stabilizing the vessel and ensuring the safe recovery of those onboard.
A Pakistan Navy spokesperson emphasized that the force remains committed to upholding international traditions of maritime rescue, reiterating its readiness to respond to emergencies irrespective of nationality or origin.
The incident serves as a reminder of the critical importance of regional coordination at sea, where humanitarian considerations often override political tensions, reinforcing shared responsibilities for safety in international waters.
