A speeding loading Suzuki vehicle crashed into a Muharram majlis tent outside an imambargah in Karachi’s DHA Phase VI, injuring 14 people and triggering panic among mourners as authorities launched an investigation into the cause of the incident.
Karachi witnessed a frightening incident on Sunday night when a speeding loading Suzuki vehicle crashed into a tent erected outside an imambargah during Muharram gatherings, leaving at least 14 people injured, most of them women.
The accident occurred near Imambargah Baqiyatullah in DHA Phase VI shortly before a Muharram majlis was scheduled to begin. According to police and rescue officials, the vehicle broke through a roadside barrier and entered the tented area, causing chaos among participants.
Eyewitnesses reported that panic spread instantly, with many fearing the crash could have been a deliberate act. The confusion briefly led to a stampede-like situation as mourners rushed to safety. Local residents quickly intervened, detaining the driver and two passengers before handing them over to police.
All injured individuals were shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for treatment. Hospital officials confirmed that the victims included women and two young children. Doctors said several patients suffered head and limb injuries, but all were reported to be in stable condition.
Police have registered a case and taken the driver into custody. Preliminary findings suggest the crash may have resulted from brake failure after the vehicle struck a barrier, though investigators are examining all possibilities. Authorities said no evidence of sabotage or terrorism has been found so far.
