Court filings reveal the late actress died intestate, leaving her mother seeking control of a $400,000 estate as probate proceedings begin in Los Angeles.
Daveigh Chase, the former child actress celebrated for voicing Lilo in Disney’s Lilo & Stitch and portraying Samara Morgan in The Ring, died without leaving a valid will, according to court documents filed in Los Angeles.
The probate filing, submitted on July 8, estimates Chase’s estate at approximately $400,000 in personal property. Because she died intestate, her mother, Cathy Chase, has asked the Los Angeles County Superior Court to appoint her as the administrator of the estate.
In the petition, Cathy Chase stated that Daveigh’s father, John Schwallier, is believed to be living in the Philippines at an unknown address, although he reportedly still owns property in Las Vegas. She also requested authority to administer the estate under California’s Independent Administration of Estates Act and sought court approval for a $400,000 probate bond.
A probate hearing is scheduled for August 12, when the court will consider the petition.
Court records confirmed that Daveigh Chase died in Los Angeles on June 16 at the age of 35. The documents state that she was experiencing homelessness at the time of her death and list a Chatsworth, California, address as her last known residence. She was unmarried and had no children.
Following her death, Roy Hernandez, who identified himself as Chase’s boyfriend, launched a GoFundMe campaign, describing the actress as a talented former child star who faced years of personal hardship after her early Hollywood success.
