Aamir Khan has once again found himself at the center of a heated public debate after reports emerged that an Islamic scholar in India’s Uttar Pradesh issued a fatwa objecting to his recent marriage to Gauri Spratt, reigniting discussions over interfaith marriages, religious interpretations and personal freedom.
According to Indian media reports, Aamir Khan and Gauri Spratt solemnized their marriage through a court ceremony on July 5. The reported interfaith union has triggered widespread debate on social media and among religious circles, with questions raised over whether the marriage aligns with certain interpretations of Islamic law.
A senior cleric from a Muslim religious institution in Uttar Pradesh reportedly stated that a Muslim man should not marry a non-Muslim woman unless she embraces Islam before the marriage. According to the cleric, marriages conducted contrary to this interpretation of Sharia are considered impermissible, and those involved should seek repentance if they believe they have violated religious principles.
In a video circulating online, the scholar described such marriages as sinful under his interpretation of Islamic teachings and argued that those who refuse to acknowledge the act as sinful would ultimately be accountable before God. He also criticized Aamir Khan’s latest marriage, claiming it negatively affects the image of Islam and expressing concern over what he described as the actor’s repeated interfaith marriages.
The controversy follows Aamir Khan’s recent response to allegations that he promotes “love jihad” through his personal relationships. Rejecting the claims, the Bollywood star said his family has always respected people of different faiths and has never pressured anyone to convert for marriage.
Aamir emphasized that none of his wives—Reena Dutta, Kiran Rao or Gauri Spratt—converted to Islam before marriage. He said each marriage was legally registered through the court system and based on mutual respect rather than religious conversion. The actor reiterated that his personal life reflects his belief in accepting people regardless of their faith.
Gauri Spratt, originally from Bengaluru, is associated with the beauty and wellness industry and reportedly has a son from a previous marriage.
This is Aamir Khan’s third marriage. He was first married to Reena Dutta, with whom he has two children, Junaid and Ira Khan. Following their divorce, he married filmmaker Kiran Rao, and the couple welcomed a son, Azad Rao Khan. Although Aamir and Kiran separated in 2021, they have continued to co-parent their son.
