OpenAI Tightens ChatGPT Safety for Teens With New Age-Based Protections

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.

It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

OpenAI is strengthening ChatGPT protections for teenagers with age-sensitive safeguards, parental controls and learning-focused features designed to make AI use safer.

OpenAI is expanding protections for teenage users on ChatGPT as the company works to make artificial intelligence safer and more age-appropriate for people under 18.

Rather than launching a completely separate chatbot called “ChatGPT for Teens,” OpenAI’s current approach is to provide a teen experience within ChatGPT. The system uses age-prediction technology and other signals to determine whether an account may belong to someone under 18. When it identifies a likely minor, additional safeguards can be applied automatically.

The enhanced protections cover several categories of sensitive content. OpenAI says the teen experience can reduce exposure to graphic violence, risky viral challenges, sexual or romantic roleplay, and material that promotes unhealthy dieting, extreme beauty standards or body shaming.

Focus on learning, not simply providing answers

Education is another major part of OpenAI’s strategy for teenage users. The company says AI should help students develop understanding, critical thinking and problem-solving skills rather than simply complete assignments for them.

OpenAI has highlighted Study Mode, which guides students through problems step by step using questions, structured explanations and opportunities for reflection. Parents with linked teen accounts can also enable Study Mode through parental controls.

AI will estimate whether a user is under 18

One of the most significant changes is OpenAI’s use of age prediction. The system can examine account and behavioral signals, including usage patterns, the times an account is typically active and how long it has existed.

If ChatGPT predicts that an account may belong to someone under 18, the teen experience can be applied without requiring the user to complete age verification first. Adults who are incorrectly placed in the teen experience can verify their age to have the additional protections removed.

Parents can add another layer of protection

OpenAI has also expanded parental controls that allow parents or guardians to link their accounts with a teenager’s account. Parents can manage selected settings, establish quiet hours and receive safety notifications in limited circumstances.

However, parental controls do not give parents routine access to their teenager’s conversations. OpenAI says notifications may be sent when its systems identify serious safety concerns, with only information considered necessary to help support the teenager.

OpenAI’s current teen-safety framework reflects a broader effort to balance access to AI with developmental and privacy considerations. The company says teenagers should be able to use AI for learning and creativity while receiving protections designed specifically for their age group.

Why it matters

The move comes as AI becomes increasingly integrated into education and everyday life for younger users. OpenAI says its goal is not to prevent teenagers from using AI, but to create a safer environment in which they can benefit from the technology while reducing exposure to potentially harmful interactions and content.
