Pakistan’s 3-0 Test series defeat to England has pushed the team to its lowest-ever position in the ICC Test rankings, raising fresh concerns about the future of red-ball cricket.
Pakistan’s Test cricket crisis has deepened after the national team slipped to ninth in the latest ICC Test rankings following a 3-0 series whitewash by England, marking the lowest position in the team’s history.
The latest setback comes after England completed a clean sweep in Birmingham on Saturday, September 12, defeating Pakistan by eight wickets in the third Test at Edgbaston. Joe Root and Jordan Cox guided England to a comfortable victory while Pakistan failed to prevent a series whitewash.
Pakistan’s decline in the longest format has been accompanied by a series of disappointing results and persistent instability. The team entered the England series already struggling in the World Test Championship and suffered another damaging blow after losing all three Tests.
The historic ranking drop has renewed debate over the direction of Pakistan’s red-ball cricket. The team had reached the top of the ICC Test rankings in 2016 under Misbah-ul-Haq, following a series draw in England. That period is now being contrasted sharply with Pakistan’s current struggles.
The problems extend beyond the latest England series. Pakistan have faced repeated difficulties in maintaining consistency, building settled combinations and producing sustained performances in Test cricket. The instability surrounding the squad and coaching setup has added to the concerns.
Pakistan’s struggles were particularly evident during the England tour, where the team suffered heavy defeats in the opening two Tests before failing to recover in the final match. The Pakistan Cricket Board also made major changes to the squad during the tour, sending several players home and bringing in replacements ahead of the third Test.
However, the series was not without a positive development for Pakistan. Debutant fast bowler Razaullah produced an impressive performance in the third Test, scoring 81 and helping Pakistan mount a late resistance with Mohammad Abbas. Despite their efforts, England eventually chased down the 130-run target to complete the whitewash.
The latest ranking setback therefore raises a larger question: can Pakistan rebuild its Test cricket structure rather than relying on repeated changes in captaincy, coaching or personnel?
