Police have formed a four-member team to investigate the killing of PML-N leader Sheikh Shabbir Ahmed near Lahore as CCTV and forensic evidence are examined.
Senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader and central chairman of the traders’ association Sheikh Shabbir Ahmed was shot dead while traveling to Lahore near SA Gardens, with police registering a murder case against eight unidentified suspects.
According to police, Shabbir Ahmed, a former chairman of Muridke Municipal Committee, was traveling in his car toward Lahore at around 10 p.m. when two vehicles carrying eight armed men intercepted him near SA Gardens Phase II.
The first information report (FIR) states that four of the attackers opened indiscriminate fire on his vehicle. Shabbir sustained critical injuries and later died.
A case was registered at Ferozewala police station on the complaint of the victim’s younger brother and former councillor, Mian Kabir Ahmed, under sections 302, 148 and 149 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
Police handed over the body to the family following a post-mortem examination and completion of legal formalities. The body was later moved to the family’s old residence, Qasr-e-Mustafa, on Bangla Road in Muridke for funeral arrangements.
Initial Investigation
Police spokesperson Rana Muhammad Younis said preliminary investigation suggested that the killing may have stemmed from an old enmity, but the motive has not yet been conclusively established.
District Police Officer (DPO) Sheikhupura Bilal Zafar Sheikh visited the crime scene along with officials from other law enforcement agencies. Forensic teams collected evidence from the site, while investigators began examining the case using modern investigative techniques.
Police said CCTV cameras installed along the GT Road had provided important leads. Investigators are also reviewing mobile phone numbers active around the time Shabbir left his factory, along with call records, to identify possible links to the attackers.
Four-Member Investigation Team
DPO Bilal Zafar Sheikh has formed a four-member special investigation team headed by SP Nawaz Sial to trace and arrest those involved in the killing. The team is examining different aspects of the case, including CCTV footage, forensic evidence and mobile phone data.
The killing has caused concern among local political circles and the business community. Shabbir Ahmed was an active political figure and held a prominent position in the traders’ community.
Federal Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain, who was considered a close associate of the slain leader, contacted the Punjab inspector general of police following the incident and called for the early arrest of the suspects.
