Apple could expand its foldable iPhone range with larger, smaller, cheaper or clamshell-style models if consumer demand proves strong.
Apple could expand its foldable iPhone lineup beyond the recently introduced iPhone Duo, with potential future models including larger, smaller and more affordable versions, according to Bloomberg Apple reporter Mark Gurman.
Gurman believes Apple’s decision to use the short “Duo” name could leave room for additional foldable iPhone variants as the market develops and consumer interest increases. Apple already uses names such as Air and Pro across several product categories.
One possible addition could be an iPhone Duo Max featuring a larger display. Apple could also consider a lower-cost iPhone Duo SE or a smaller iPhone Duo Mini. Another potential direction would be a clamshell-style foldable iPhone that folds vertically into a more compact form.
None of these potential products has been confirmed by Apple. The possibilities are based on Gurman’s analysis of Apple’s product strategy and its entry into the foldable smartphone market.
Gurman expects foldable phones to become increasingly important in the smartphone industry over the next decade. He has predicted that foldable devices could eventually account for a majority of new phone sales.
Apple’s first foldable iPhone could contribute to that broader shift. Gurman expects the iPhone Duo to become one of the leading devices in the category next year, while Apple’s entry could also encourage wider consumer adoption of foldable smartphones.
The company has previously been linked to products that did not ultimately reach consumers. Apple was reportedly exploring a lower-cost version of its Vision Pro headset before shifting greater attention toward smart glasses. That history illustrates why reported product development does not necessarily mean a device will eventually launch.
Future foldable iPhones could face the same uncertainty. Apple may test different screen sizes and designs before deciding which versions offer enough consumer demand and commercial potential to justify a release.
The iPhone Duo is positioned as a premium device, with a starting price of around $2,000, making it significantly more expensive than many conventional flagship smartphones. Its high price means it is unlikely to replace standard iPhones for most consumers in the near term.
Apple’s foldable strategy also places it in a market where rivals have had several years to develop their products. Samsung launched its first Galaxy Fold in 2019, while other smartphone manufacturers have introduced foldable devices in different designs and form factors.
Apple’s large user base and strong position in the premium smartphone market could nevertheless give its foldable devices significant influence. For now, however, the company has not confirmed plans for additional foldable iPhone models.
The iPhone Duo is scheduled to become available for preorder on Oct. 16, ahead of its Oct. 23 release. Its reception could provide Apple with an important indication of whether there is enough demand to expand its foldable lineup.
