Fresh Fuel Price Hike Adds to Pressure on Pakistani Consumers

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.

It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Petrol rises by Rs6.88 and high-speed diesel by Rs5.62 per litre as Pakistan continues its daily petroleum pricing mechanism.

Pakistan has increased the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD), with petrol rising by Rs6.88 per litre to Rs391.22 and diesel increasing by Rs5.62 to Rs421.45.

The latest revision comes a day after the government raised the price of petrol by Rs4.10 per litre and HSD by Rs6.41 per litre. The repeated adjustments are being implemented under the government’s daily petroleum pricing mechanism.

Under the latest rates, petrol will be available at Rs391.22 per litre, while high-speed diesel will cost Rs421.45 per litre.

The daily pricing system was introduced in July, replacing the previous weekly review mechanism for petroleum prices. The change came amid increased volatility in international oil markets linked to renewed tensions between the United States and Iran and concerns about global fuel supplies.

The continued rise in domestic fuel prices has also prompted the government to propose a relief programme aimed at reducing the impact on lower-income consumers.

Under the proposed fuel subsidy scheme, motorcycles, three-wheelers and cars with engines up to 800cc would receive assistance of up to Rs100 per litre.

The government estimates that around 11.8 million people would benefit from the programme. About 10 million motorcycle users and 800,000 three-wheeler users would be eligible for subsidies on up to 20 litres of fuel per month, with a maximum monthly benefit of Rs2,000.

Around one million owners of cars with engines up to 800cc would also qualify for assistance on 30 litres of fuel each month. This would allow eligible small-car owners to receive up to Rs3,000 in monthly support.

The proposed programme is expected to have a monthly financial impact of around Rs24.6 billion. Of this amount, approximately Rs20 billion would be allocated for motorcycle users, Rs1.6 billion for three-wheelers and Rs3 billion for small cars.
