French authorities carried out a search on Tuesday at the Paris offices of Elon Musk’s social media platform X as part of an investigation that began in January 2025 the Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed. The operation was conducted by France’s cybercrime division with support from Europol highlighting the cross-border nature of the case.
According to prosecutors the investigation focuses on alleged offenses related to online content and the management of the platform.Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau said the probe has recently expanded to include concerns over Grok’s sexualized deepfakes signaling heightened scrutiny of potentially illegal and harmful content hosted on X.
Elon Musk chairman of X, and former CEO Linda Yaccarino have both been summoned to appear at hearings scheduled for April. Several current employees of the platform are also expected to be questioned as witnesses. Authorities have not confirmed whether any charges have been filed or arrests made at this stage.
The investigation reflects a broader push by European regulators to hold social media platforms accountable for content moderation, including deepfakes, misinformation and other material that may violate national laws. Europol’s involvement underscores growing cooperation among European agencies to combat cybercrime.
