LAHORE: (Click Pakistan) The Basant festival returned to Lahore, reviving a cultural celebration that had largely remained dormant for nearly 25 years, as authorities enforced strict security measures and favorable weather supported traditional kite-flying activities.
The provincial capital came alive with colorful kites, music and celebrations as residents gathered on rooftops and in neighborhoods, chanting traditional slogans while marking the festival’s official reopening under government supervision.
Punjab Inspector General of Police Rao Abdul Karim ordered heightened security across Lahore during the three-day festivities. Police were directed to strictly enforce government-issued safety protocols to ensure public security. Authorities emphasized a zero-tolerance policy toward aerial firing, public display of weapons, and other activities considered disruptive or dangerous.
Officials also warned against the use of hazardous kite strings, including metal and chemical-coated strings, which have previously caused serious injuries and fatalities. Law enforcement agencies were instructed to take strict action against violators, while maintaining enhanced vigilance in sensitive areas. The ban on kite flying near airports, flight routes and security installations remains in effect.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department reported weather conditions favorable for celebrations. Winds were recorded between 5 and 7 kilometers per hour, providing suitable conditions for kite flying. Temperatures remained cool, with early morning readings at 8 degrees Celsius and a projected daytime high of 24 degrees Celsius.
