Karachi: A massive fire broke out late Friday night at a factory located inside the Export Processing Zone (EPZ) in Landhi prompting an emergency response from rescue and firefighting teams.
According to Rescue 1122 officials the blaze erupted at a plastic manufacturing unit and rapidly spread from the ground floor to the upper floor of the factory building. Due to the intensity of the fire authorities feared it could engulf additional floors and nearby industrial units.
At least six fire tenders were immediately dispatched to the scene, while additional firefighting vehicles and snorkels were called in from various parts of the city to control the flames. Firefighters worked for several hours to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to adjacent factories.
Officials confirmed that no casualties or injuries had been reported at the time of filing this report. However the extent of the damage could not be determined as firefighting operations were still in progress.
Sindh Police Chief Javed Alam Odho directed senior police and traffic officials of Malir district to reach the site and oversee security measures. The area was cordoned off and traffic was diverted to ensure smooth access for emergency teams.
The incident adds to a series of recent fire outbreaks in Karachi raising renewed concerns over fire safety in the city’s industrial and commercial zones.
