TEHRAN: The Norwegian Nobel Committee has called on Iranian authorities to immediately release Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi following her recent arrest describing her detention as brutal.
Mohammadi a leading Iranian human rights activist and recipient of the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize was detained by security forces in December 2025 while attending a memorial event in Mashhad. She was recognized internationally for her long standing advocacy for women’s rights and civil freedoms in Iran.
According to statements from her foundation and family, Mohammadi was violently arrested reportedly beaten and taken into custody sparking widespread international concern over her safety and well being.
Iranian authorities have since extended her prison sentence by several years, adding to the lengthy imprisonment she has already endured due to her activism. Supporters claim that Mohammadi has initiated a hunger strike in protest against her detention and prison conditions.
The Nobel Committee, along with international human rights organizations condemned her arrest and sentencing calling them serious violations of fundamental human rights. They renewed demands for her immediate and unconditional release.
