GENEVA: Iran and the United States reached an understanding on key guiding principles during nuclear talks in Geneva on Tuesday Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said though he stressed that a final deal is not imminent.
The indirect discussions, mediated by Oman involved US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner alongside Iranian officials. Araghchi noted that ideas were seriously discussed, resulting in a general agreement on principles to guide future negotiations.
Following the talks, Iran announced a temporary partial closure of the Strait of Hormuz for military exercises by the Revolutionary Guards a strategic oil shipping route. Oil prices fell, easing fears of regional conflict.
Araghchi called on the US to cease threats of force emphasizing a new window of opportunity for a sustainable solution that ensures Iran’s nuclear rights are recognized. Tehran confirmed it will focus only on its nuclear program, rejecting discussions on missiles or full uranium abandonment.
Officials said Iran will submit detailed proposals within two weeks to close gaps in positions. Meanwhile, US and international observers continue to monitor progress noting that sanctions relief and realistic demands will be crucial for a potential agreement.
