MUMBAI: West Indies defeated Zimbabwe by 107 runs in a Super 8 match of the ICC T20 World Cup at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to field a decision that backfired as West Indies posted a commanding total of 254 for 6 in their 20 overs.
West Indies’ innings featured 19 sixes and 16 fours, marking the second highest T20 World Cup score in history, just behind Sri Lanka’s 260 against Kenya in 2007. Shamron Hetmyer was the star with 85 runs off 34 balls including 7 sixes and 7 fours. Rovman Powell scored 59 off 29 balls while Sherfane Rutherford added 31.
In reply Zimbabwe struggled and were bowled out for 147 in 18 overs. Brad Evans top-scored with 43 off 28 balls hitting 5 sixes. West Indies’ Gudakesh Motie and Akeal Hosein took 4 and 3 wickets respectively.
Hetmyer’s 19 ball half-century became the fastest for West Indies in T20 World Cup history, surpassing his previous 22 ball effort against Scotland and eclipsing Chris Gayle’s 23 ball half century in 2009. The overall fastest T20I half century remains with Yuvraj Singh who scored 50 off 12 balls against England in 2007.
