ISLAMABAD: The Government of Pakistan has approved new reforms allowing women to include their father’s name in passports a move hailed as a significant step toward recognizing women’s independent legal identity.
The Directorate General of Immigration and Passports issued a notification announcing the change, noting that the decision follows directives from the Lahore High Court. The court had instructed the government to complete consultations and update the passport system accordingly.
According to the notification the reform removes a major barrier for women in accessing economic, social, and civil rights. It reflects the government’s commitment to promoting gender equality and ensuring women can exercise their legal identity freely.
The reforms were implemented under the guidance of Interior Minister and Law Minister with the Directorate General of Passports led by Mustafa Jamal Qazi overseeing the necessary software updates.
The initiative is being highlighted as a joint example of gender-responsive service delivery by the government and UN Women. Officials described it as a progressive step toward empowering women and ensuring their rights are fully recognized across legal and administrative platforms in Pakistan.
