Citizens to Receive Free M-Tag Chips; System Includes Enhanced Security Features
ISLAMABAD: Islamabad Deputy Commissioner Irfan Nawaz Memon announced on Wednesday that a new M-Tag chip for motorcycles is under development and will be provided free of cost to citizens once completed. The Frontier Works Organization (FWO) is designing the upgraded chip to enhance the existing tagging system.
Memon explained that the current M-Tags cannot be reused once removed from a motorcycle. In case of theft, citizens can report the M-Tag through the official helpline, after which it will be blocked and replaced free of charge.
The M-Tag system also incorporates advanced safety and security features. In addition, security at Mosques and Imam bargahs across Islamabad has been strengthened with field officers deployed for monitoring.
The deputy commissioner added that online taxi registration is ongoing, with over 19,000 taxis and motorcycles already registered. Drivers must upload passenger details, including pick-up and drop-off locations and identification, as part of the city’s security protocols.
“Just as in many countries, taxis cannot operate without licenses,” Memon said, emphasizing that Islamabad’s registration process is part of a broader security framework.
