A powerful westerly wave is expected to trigger intense weather conditions across Pakistan, with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa facing the highest risk through early next week.
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued a nationwide weather alert, warning of severe atmospheric conditions set to hit multiple regions starting May 2, raising concerns about potential disruptions and damage.
According to the advisory, a strong westerly wave is forecast to enter the northwestern parts of the country by Friday evening, bringing with it widespread dust-thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, hailstorms, and strong winds. The system is expected to persist in the upper regions until the morning of May 5, intensifying weather activity across large swathes of the country.
The department identified Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as the most vulnerable region, where severe weather events could lead to localized flooding, damage to crops, and disruptions in transportation. Upper and central parts of Pakistan are also expected to experience volatile conditions during this period.
Officials have urged local authorities to take precautionary measures and ensure emergency response readiness, particularly in areas prone to flash flooding and infrastructure vulnerability. Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, secure loose objects, and remain updated with official weather bulletins.
Pakistan frequently experiences extreme weather patterns during seasonal transitions, particularly due to incoming western disturbances. Experts warn that such systems can rapidly intensify, posing risks to both urban and rural communities, especially in regions with limited disaster preparedness.
The latest alert underscores the increasing unpredictability of weather systems in the region, prompting renewed calls for improved early warning mechanisms and climate resilience planning.
