FIFA World Cup 2026 Breaks All-Time Goal Record, History Made
The 2026 FIFA World Cup has officially become the highest-scoring tournament in World Cup history, setting a new benchmark for attacking football and unforgettable entertainment. The milestone highlights the excitement of the expanded competition, with fans witnessing an unprecedented number of goals before the knockout stage has even begun.
The record-breaking moment arrived during the Group D clash between the United States men’s national soccer team and the Turkey national football team. USA defender Auston Trusty scored the tournament’s 173rd goal, eclipsing the previous World Cup record of 172 goals established during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The historic achievement was followed by a thrilling encounter, as Turkey secured a dramatic 3-2 victory with a stoppage-time winner. By the final whistle, the tournament’s overall goal tally had climbed to an impressive 177.
The feat is even more remarkable because of how quickly it was achieved. While the 2022 World Cup required all 64 matches to reach 172 goals, the 2026 tournament surpassed that mark after only 59 matches, underlining the competition’s relentless attacking style.
Football experts attribute much of the scoring surge to the tournament’s expanded format. For the first time in World Cup history, 48 nations are competing, increasing the total number of matches from 64 to 104. The additional fixtures have created more opportunities for attacking football, producing dramatic comebacks, late winners, and high-scoring contests throughout the group stage.
Gianni Infantino welcomed the milestone, describing it as a reflection of the tournament’s quality and excitement. In an Instagram post, he praised the attacking mentality shown by participating teams and said the new scoring record demonstrates why the 2026 World Cup is becoming one of the most memorable editions in football history.
