Senior Jamaat-e-Islami leader Ameer-ul-Azeem, known for decades of political and organizational service, has died after battling cancer. His funeral prayers will be held in Lahore on Wednesday evening.
LAHORE: Ameer-ul-Azeem, Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Pakistan, has died after a prolonged battle with cancer, the party confirmed on Wednesday. He was a veteran political and organizational leader whose career with Jamaat-e-Islami spanned several decades.
According to a party spokesperson, Ameer-ul-Azeem passed away following a long illness. His funeral prayers are scheduled to be offered at 5:00 p.m. today at Mansoora, Lahore, where party workers, political leaders, and supporters are expected to gather to pay their final respects.
Born in Lahore in 1958, Ameer-ul-Azeem received his early education at Islamia School Sant Nagar before completing intermediate studies at Islamia College Railway Road. He later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics and Double Mathematics from Islamia College Civil Lines and completed an MBA from the University of the Punjab.
His association with Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba (IJT) began during his student years. He went on to become the elected president of the Punjab University Students’ Union and later served as Nazim-e-Aala of IJT.
During the military rule of General Zia-ul-Haq, Ameer-ul-Azeem led a campaign demanding the restoration of student unions. His participation in the movement resulted in imprisonment, during which he was elected head of Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba, reflecting his influence within the student organization.
Over the years, he held several senior positions in Jamaat-e-Islami, including Central Secretary for Information, Secretary General of the party’s Lahore chapter, and Ameer of Lahore. In 2019, he was appointed Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan by then party chief Siraj-ul-Haq after consultation with the party’s Central Shura.
