Maryam Nawaz Announces Major Railway Upgrade Project Linking Lahore to Rawalpindi

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.

It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Ambitious rail project aims to modernize transport infrastructure and improve regional connectivity across Punjab

RAWALPINDI: The Punjab government and Pakistan Railways have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to launch a major railway modernization project aimed at improving connectivity and travel efficiency across the province.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz oversaw the agreement, marking a significant step toward upgrading Pakistan’s rail infrastructure. The initiative includes the development of eight new railway routes covering approximately 1,415 kilometers, making it one of the largest rail expansion plans in recent years.

Officials said the flagship route between Lahore and Rawalpindi will feature a high-speed train capable of completing the journey in nearly 2.5 hours, significantly reducing travel time between the two major cities.

The project also includes routes such as Shahdara-Narowal-Sialkot, Raiwind-Kasur-Pakpattan-Lodhran, Sheikhupura-Jaranwala-Shorkot, Lalamusa-Malikwal-Sargodha, Faisalabad-Chak Jhumra-Shahinaabad, and Kot Adu-Dera Ghazi Khan-Kashmore. Authorities say these corridors will enhance regional mobility and support economic growth.

Railway Minister Hanif Abbasi confirmed that practical work on the project will begin soon, following approval of feasibility studies and funding arrangements.

Speaking at the event, Maryam Nawaz said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to modernizing public transport and making rail travel faster, safer, and more accessible.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has also expressed support for the project, calling it a milestone in the country’s development agenda.
