Pakistan’s winless run in the FIH Pro League stretched to 12 matches after a 4-2 defeat against Spain, intensifying pressure ahead of a crucial clash with India.
Pakistan’s struggles in the FIH Pro League deepened on Sunday after a 4-2 loss to Spain in Belgium, extending the national team’s winless streak to 12 consecutive matches and raising concerns about its form ahead of a highly anticipated encounter with India.
Despite facing a Spanish side that rested several experienced players and handed opportunities to younger talent, Pakistan failed to capitalize. Defensive errors and missed chances once again proved costly as the Green Shirts slipped to another disappointing defeat.
The match began cautiously, with Spain looking more dangerous in the opening stages. Pakistan goalkeeper Ali Raza delivered a crucial penalty-stroke save to keep his team level and provide an early boost.
Pakistan finally broke through in the 28th minute when Abubakar Mahmood converted a well-crafted move to give his side a 1-0 lead. However, the advantage lasted only a minute as Spain responded instantly through Pep Cañellas, restoring parity and shifting momentum.
After a balanced first half, Spain dominated the third quarter and scored twice in quick succession to take control of the contest. Abubakar Mahmood struck again to cut the deficit to 3-2 and briefly revive Pakistan’s hopes, but Spain sealed the result with a fourth goal in the final quarter.
The latest setback highlights Pakistan’s ongoing issues with defensive consistency despite showing flashes of attacking promise. The pressure is now mounting as the team heads to England for the final phase of the Pro League.
