Punjab education authorities consider reducing summer vacations to recover academic losses, final decision expected after May 15.
ISLAMABAD: Uncertainty continues to surround summer vacations in Punjab’s educational institutions as Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat announced that a final decision will only be made after May 15, signaling possible changes that could significantly impact students and schools alike.
Addressing ongoing speculation, the minister clarified that circulating reports about confirmed holiday schedules are inaccurate. He emphasized that the government is carefully evaluating multiple proposals aimed at improving the academic system and compensating for lost instructional time.
According to details shared with media, including ARY News, authorities are considering reducing summer vacations by 15 to 20 days this year. The move is part of a broader strategy to increase total teaching days from 180 to 190, ensuring timely completion of the academic curriculum.
Officials are also reviewing a proposal to shorten winter vacations by five to six days, reflecting a shift toward a more balanced academic calendar. The minister noted that excessively long breaks disrupt learning continuity, making it necessary to adopt a more structured and efficient approach.
He further stated that the final holiday schedule will be announced only after approval from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, underscoring the importance of high-level consultation in the decision-making process.
However, authorities remain cautious due to rising temperatures. If extreme heat conditions intensify toward the end of May, the government may opt for an early closure of schools, similar to last year, to safeguard students’ health.
The evolving situation leaves students, parents, and educators awaiting clarity, as the government attempts to balance academic recovery with public health concerns.
