In Washington, D.C., U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Donald Trump prefers diplomacy over escalation in the ongoing tensions with Iran, confirming that indirect negotiations between the two sides are currently underway.
In an interview with Al Jazeera, Rubio revealed that messages are being exchanged through intermediaries, indicating continued backchannel communication despite heightened conflict. He emphasized that President Trump has consistently prioritized diplomatic solutions and believes the crisis could have been resolved earlier.
Addressing concerns over the strategic Strait of Hormuz, Rubio said the waterway would be reopened after ongoing military operations, either with Iran’s cooperation or through a multinational effort led by the United States. He warned that any attempt by Iran to block the strait would result in serious consequences.
Rubio also accused Iran of supporting groups such as Hezbollah and Hamas, as well as Shia militias in Iraq, claiming Tehran is destabilizing the region. He reiterated that the U.S. will not allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons and accused it of attempting to use such capabilities for global leverage.
He concluded by stating that U.S. objectives are clear and could be achieved within weeks rather than months.
