Spain coach Luis de la Fuente confirms Lamine Yamal is fully fit for the FIFA World Cup 2026 opener against Cape Verde, but the teenage star will start on the bench as Spain carefully manage his return from injury.
Spain have provided a significant fitness update on rising star Lamine Yamal ahead of their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign, confirming the talented winger is available for selection but will not start in the opening match against Cape Verde in Atlanta.
The 18-year-old forward has been sidelined since suffering a hamstring injury on April 22, creating uncertainty over his participation in the early stages of the tournament. However, after completing a full week of training, Yamal has been declared fit and ready to feature.
Speaking before the Group H clash, Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente revealed that the Barcelona youngster is physically ready but will be introduced gradually to avoid any risk of aggravating the injury.
“He is available, but not to start the game. He is in perfect condition to play some minutes,” De la Fuente said, indicating Yamal could make an impact from the bench during the second half.
Spain are also taking a cautious approach with wide players Nico Williams and Victor Munoz, who are likewise expected to begin the match among the substitutes as they continue building match fitness.
Despite the selection concerns, Spain enter the World Cup as one of the tournament favourites following their triumph at the UEFA Euro 2024. Their recent success has strengthened expectations that La Roja can challenge for another major international title.
The Spanish squad has also attracted attention for an unusual reason: no player from Real Madrid is expected to start in the opening fixture. Nevertheless, De la Fuente dismissed concerns over external distractions, including ongoing transfer speculation involving several players.
“I know the commitment and professionalism they all have. No one in the team would jeopardise the good of the team,” the coach stated.
