Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metrobus service was abruptly suspended on Monday after protesting employees blocked the metro track in protest against alleged layoffs, leaving thousands of commuters stranded across the twin cities.
The sudden closure of the major public transport network triggered severe disruption for office workers, students and daily passengers traveling between Rawalpindi and Islamabad during peak hours.
According to reports, a large number of metro employees staged a sit-in protest on the bus track, completely halting bus operations. Women employees were also part of the demonstration, chanting slogans against the dismissals and demanding immediate restoration of their jobs.
The protesters claimed that their employment contracts were valid until 2027, but despite that, they were removed from service. They further alleged that salaries for the past two months had not been paid, increasing frustration and uncertainty among workers.
Demonstrators accused authorities of terminating existing staff after awarding the metro bus service contract to a new company. Protesters described the move as unfair and demanded transparency regarding the transition process.
The suspension of the metro service caused widespread inconvenience for residents who rely on the transport system for commuting to workplaces, educational institutions and other daily activities. Several passengers were reportedly forced to seek expensive alternative transport options amid the disruption.
The protesting employees appealed to Maryam Nawaz and the government to immediately intervene, reinstate dismissed workers and ensure payment of pending dues.
Meanwhile, citizens also urged authorities to resolve the crisis quickly and restore metro operations to prevent further disruption to daily life in the federal capital and surrounding areas.
