A fresh westerly wave is set to bring intermittent heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and snowfall in northern regions through April 17, prompting safety advisories.
ISLAMABAD: A new rain-bearing weather system is expected to enter the upper parts of Pakistan today, bringing widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and snowfall in northern areas, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).
The Met Office said the westerly wave will affect multiple regions, with intermittent heavy rainfall likely to continue until April 17. Authorities have issued alerts for several districts, warning of possible urban flooding and travel disruptions.
Rain is expected in Chitral, Dir, Swat, Mansehra, and Abbottabad, while major cities including Islamabad, Murree, Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Sialkot may also receive showers.
In higher altitudes of Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, snowfall is also forecast. Officials cautioned that heavy rain may trigger landslides in mountainous areas and cause water surges in streams and nullahs.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) confirmed that intermittent rainfall is likely across Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan through April 17.
Meanwhile, the National Highways and Motorway Police issued a travel advisory, urging motorists to avoid unnecessary travel during rain. Drivers are advised to reduce speed, maintain safe distance, ensure vehicle lights and wipers are functional, and avoid sudden braking.
Authorities also warned against mobile phone use while driving and urged citizens to remain alert. In case of emergencies, travelers can contact the motorway police helpline at 130.
