Accountability court in Lahore allows surrender plea and suspends arrest warrants in long-running clean water corruption case
LAHORE: An accountability court in Lahore has suspended arrest warrants, including permanent and red warrants, issued against Rabia Imran and her spouse Imran Ali Yousaf in connection with the clean water company corruption case.
The decision was announced by Accountability Court Judge Rana Muhammad Arif, who issued a written order after approving the plea filed by the accused to surrender before the court.
According to the court order, both individuals have been directed to appear before the court on May 5. The suspension of warrants provides them temporary legal relief, allowing them to present themselves voluntarily rather than facing immediate arrest.
The case relates to alleged corruption in a public sector clean water company project, which has remained under legal proceedings for several years. In March 2021, the accountability court had issued perpetual arrest warrants against both accused after they failed to appear before the court during earlier hearings.
Legal proceedings in accountability courts often involve strict compliance requirements, including mandatory court appearances. The issuance of permanent and red warrants is typically reserved for individuals declared absconders, reflecting the seriousness of non-compliance with judicial orders.
The latest development marks a significant turn in the case, as the court has now accepted the request of the accused to rejoin the legal process. By allowing their surrender plea, the court has opened the door for further hearings where the charges and evidence will be examined in detail.
Such decisions are generally aimed at ensuring due process, enabling courts to proceed with trials while giving accused individuals an opportunity to defend themselves within the legal framework.
The case has drawn public attention due to the involvement of individuals linked to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, though legal experts emphasize that court proceedings are conducted independently based on evidence and applicable laws.
Further proceedings are expected following the scheduled appearance, which may determine the next course of action in the long-standing corruption case.
