Anti-Terrorism Court approves bail against surety bonds of Rs.5,000 each after prolonged detention
ISLAMABAD: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Islamabad has approved bail for 11 individuals who were arrested during protests held on March 1 following reports related to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The court ordered the release of the accused after approximately one and a half months in custody, directing that each be freed upon submission of surety bonds worth Rs.5,000.
According to court proceedings, the accused were detained in connection with demonstrations that took place in various parts of the federal capital. Law enforcement agencies had registered cases citing public disorder and alleged violations of security regulations during the protests.
Defense counsel argued that the prolonged detention of the accused was unjustified and that the charges did not warrant continued incarceration. The prosecution, however, maintained that the protests had disrupted public order and required legal action.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the court granted bail, emphasizing that the accused could be released on financial guarantees while the trial proceedings continue.
Legal experts note that bail in such cases does not equate to acquittal but allows the accused to remain free while attending court hearings as required.
