Rising meat prices put financial strain on Quetta households during holy month
QUETTA: Residents of Quetta are facing growing financial pressure as meat and essential food prices surge during Ramazan, making it increasingly difficult for many families to manage daily expenses.
Market sources reported that mutton prices have jumped from around Rs2,200 per kilogram to nearly Rs2,500, while beef has risen from Rs1,400 to Rs1,600 per kg. Chicken prices have also increased from Rs550 to approximately Rs640 per kg. The sharp rise comes as demand typically grows during sehri and iftar.
Middle- and low-income households are feeling the brunt of the increases, with many reducing meat consumption or opting for cheaper alternatives. Residents say that prices were already high before Ramazan, and the latest hikes have intensified the financial burden.
In response to public complaints of overcharging, the district administration conducted crackdowns on profiteers. Officials reported that 125 shopkeepers were arrested and 37 shops sealed for violating official price lists.
Deputy Commissioner Mehrullah Badini warned that strict action will continue against those exploiting citizens, emphasizing that authorities will show no leniency toward illegal price hikes.
