MADRID: Fifteen United States military aircraft have departed from joint Spanish US bases in southern Spain after Madrid made it clear its facilities would not be used for operations against Iran according to flight tracking data and official statements.
Data from FlightRadar24 showed aircraft leaving the Naval Base Rota and Morón Air Base following recent US and Israeli strikes on Iran. Although jointly operated by Spain and the United States the bases remain under Spanish sovereignty.
Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares stated that Spain would not permit its bases to be used for actions against Iran emphasizing adherence to existing bilateral agreements and the UN Charter.
Tracking data indicated that several aircraft, including Boeing KC1 35 Stratotanker refuelling planes landed at Ramstein Air Base in Germany, while others headed toward France.
The move comes amid rising regional tensions after strikes on Iran. Spain’s stance contrasts with Britain’s recent decision to allow base access highlighting differing approaches among Western allies as diplomatic efforts continue alongside heightened military activity.
