A false intelligence report generated with the help of artificial intelligence nearly prompted the US military to intercept and board a Chinese vessel in the Middle East during the war with Iran, according to CNN reporting cited by multiple media outlets.
The report, which circulated within the US military this spring, claimed the Chinese vessel was carrying components linked to a nuclear weapons program. The assessment triggered preparations for an operation against the ship, with armed US personnel reportedly preparing to board it while military aircraft were already in the air, according to sources familiar with the incident.
The planned operation was halted shortly before it was due to begin after officials conducted a closer review of the intelligence and discovered that artificial intelligence had been used in preparing the assessment. The chatbot involved had incorrectly identified material listed in the vessel’s cargo information, according to the reports.
The intelligence originated from information about the ship’s manifest associated with US Special Operations Command Pacific in Hawaii. A special operations analyst reportedly used a chatbot to examine the information and assess the vessel’s cargo. The AI system combined open-source information with classified intelligence and reached an inaccurate conclusion about what the Chinese ship was carrying.
The analyst then reportedly used AI to turn the assessment into a conventional intelligence report, which was circulated through military channels.
