BEIJING: Donald Trump and Xi Jinping held high-level talks in Beijing on Friday, discussing trade relations, Iran’s nuclear programme and broader global security concerns in a meeting closely watched by international markets and diplomatic observers.
Speaking after the meeting, Trump said the two leaders addressed several unresolved commercial and geopolitical issues, adding that both sides had reached agreements related to trade cooperation between the United States and China.
“We have made trade agreements with China,” Trump told reporters after the talks, without immediately disclosing detailed terms of the understandings reached during the meeting.
The discussions also focused heavily on Iran and rising concerns surrounding stability in the Middle East. Trump reiterated Washington’s long-standing position against Tehran acquiring nuclear weapons capability.
“I don’t want Iran to have nuclear weapons,” Trump said, emphasizing that the issue was directly discussed with Xi during the Beijing meeting.
Another major topic raised during the talks was the security of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important maritime routes for global oil shipments and international trade flows.
Trump said both Washington and Beijing agreed on the importance of keeping major international shipping lanes open and secure amid growing regional uncertainty.
“We want the Strait of Hormuz to remain open,” he said.
The meeting comes at a sensitive time for global diplomacy, with trade relations between the United States and China remaining under scrutiny despite efforts by both governments to stabilize economic ties. Analysts say cooperation between the world’s two largest economies on trade and maritime security could help reduce volatility in global markets.
The talks also highlight increasing international concern over developments involving Iran and broader regional stability, particularly as disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz could significantly impact global energy prices and supply chains.
While neither side released a detailed joint statement immediately after the meeting, Trump indicated that discussions with Xi covered a broad spectrum of international and economic issues affecting both countries and the wider global economy.
