Dr Yasmin Rashid has approached the Supreme Court of Pakistan challenging the electoral victory of Nawaz Sharif in the recent general elections.
Dr Rashid who contested the polls as a candidate backed by Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf initially filed a petition before the Election Tribunal after losing the contest to the Pakistan Muslim League-N leader. However the tribunal dismissed her plea.
In her appeal Dr Rashid argued that the tribunal rejected her case on technical grounds without properly examining the factual and legal dimensions of the dispute. She alleged that alterations were made to Form 45, the official result document prepared at polling stations, claiming such changes undermine the constitutional requirement of transparency in elections.
The petition further stated that notices must legally be issued to all contesting candidates before compiling and finalising election results. Dr Rashid claimed that no such notice was served to her describing the omission as a violation of due process and her legal rights.
She has requested the Supreme Court to declare the tribunal’s decision null and void and has asked to be declared the returned candidate. The case is expected to attract significant legal and political attention.
