Police invoke PECA and Pakistan Penal Code provisions after journalists alleged an organized online campaign involving defamatory and threatening social media posts.
SHEIKHUPURA: Police have registered a case against eight individuals in Sheikhupura over allegations of posting defamatory and offensive content against journalists on social media.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the complainant alleged that the suspects launched an organized campaign on various social media platforms, including Facebook, by sharing objectionable, defamatory and provocative material targeting members of the local journalist community. The complaint further claimed that the posts were intended to damage the reputation of journalists and create hostility.
Based on the complaint and preliminary inquiry, police registered the case under Sections 18, 21 and 22 of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016, along with Sections 153-A, 500 and 504 of the Pakistan Penal Code. The FIR states that further investigation is underway to determine the roles of all nominated suspects and collect digital evidence.
