The Election Commission of Pakistan has disqualified Murad Saeed, a leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and former federal minister.
In a significant development, the Election Commission declared Murad Saeed ineligible after he had been elected to a general Senate seat from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. His victory notification has been withdrawn, and the seat has been declared vacant. This decision was formally announced on March 25, 2026.
According to details, the action was taken in light of a March 7, 2026 verdict by Anti-Terrorism Court No. 1 in Rawalpindi. In the case titled “State vs Asim Rehman and others,” Murad Saeed was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Based on this court ruling, the Election Commission disqualified him under the relevant provisions of Article 63 of the Constitution of Pakistan.
The Election Commission’s statement further clarified that Murad Saeed had earlier been notified as a successful candidate for the Senate seat on July 24, 2025. However, following the court’s conviction, he no longer qualifies to hold the position. Therefore, he has been de-notified with immediate effect, and the seat has been declared vacant.
The statement also mentioned that the decision was made after thorough deliberation in an Election Commission meeting. Copies of the notification have been sent to the President, Prime Minister, Senate Secretariat, Provincial Election Commissioner Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and other relevant authorities to proceed with further constitutional requirements.
