Pakistan Power Consumers Face Fresh Electricity Tariff Shock From Next Month

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.

It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Electricity distribution companies have sought a quarterly tariff adjustment from NEPRA, with consumers potentially facing higher bills after existing relief expires.

ISLAMABAD: Electricity consumers across Pakistan could face higher bills from next month as distribution companies seek a new quarterly tariff adjustment from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA).

Sources said the proposed adjustment could increase electricity prices by around Rs1 per unit during the upcoming quarter. However, the final impact will depend on NEPRA’s review and approval of the figures submitted by the power distribution companies.

The expected increase comes as an existing relief of Rs1.99 per unit is scheduled to expire at the end of the current month. Once that relief ends, consumers could see a corresponding rise in their electricity bills, subject to the regulator’s final decision.

Under Pakistan’s quarterly tariff adjustment mechanism, changes in power generation costs and other eligible expenses are periodically passed on to consumers. The adjustment can result in either an increase or decrease in electricity prices, depending on the costs verified by NEPRA.

The proposed increase could place additional pressure on households and businesses already dealing with high electricity expenses. For consumers, the final tariff will depend on NEPRA’s assessment of the distribution companies’ claims, including the underlying costs and applicable adjustments.

NEPRA is expected to examine the submitted data before announcing its decision. The regulator may approve the requested amount, modify it or determine a different adjustment after completing its scrutiny.
