European leaders resist US pressure for military action, citing lack of strategy and rising public opposition
WEB DESK: A widening rift has emerged between the United States and its European allies after leaders in Berlin, Paris and London رفض calls by Donald Trump to join a military coalition against Iran in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Reuters, European officials cited the absence of a clear strategy and lack of prior consultation as key reasons for refusing to support US-Israeli operations, despite escalating tensions threatening global trade routes.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz delivered a rare rebuke, telling lawmakers Washington had failed to present a “convincing plan.” Defence Minister Boris Pistorius underscored the stance, stating, “This is not our war.”
French President Emmanuel Macron echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that France would not participate in the conflict. Public opinion across Europe has also turned sharply against intervention, with polls in Germany and Spain showing strong opposition.
The response has drawn criticism from Trump, who called Europe’s statement a “very foolish mistake” and mocked British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. However, Starmer appears supported domestically, as surveys indicate significant public resistance to military involvement.
Meanwhile, the European Union, led by foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, is working to stabilize the situation and explore independent measures to safeguard maritime security without direct US participation.
